This may be a sign that both CDs were mastered from the same tape. While the "03" does restore Tom Sawyer's opening drum hit, Vital Signs and Red Barchetta still have the late fade-ins from the "02" Atomic. I have some evidence that might support this observation:Īccording to a frequency chart that I made earlier in this thread, it looks like the "02" and "03" Atomics have virtually no differences in EQ. Honeybunch thinks the source used for the Atomics might've been an LP production tape. Another problem is that the the vocals and drums sound a little thin in some spots, and the top and bottom EQ frequencies are a bit rolled-off to me. My first problem is that the fade-ins at the beginning of Red Barchetta and Vital Signs start about 2 or 3 seconds too late, though most people probably won't mind about this. While they're not outright bad, there are some things that I don't like about them. The "03" or US Atomics correct both of these issues, though other than that, these 2 versions are actually extremely similar.Īs controversial as it may be for me to admit this, I'm not a big fan of the MP Atomics. The one that has "02" on the disc's stacking ring cuts out some of the first drum hit in Tom Sawyer's intro. If you still want the Atomic, keep in mind that that WG actually had 2 of them. The silverface is dirt cheap, so try to pick up a copy if you can find it. My personal favorite CD versions of this album are the MFSL and the US silverface. Caress of Steel and Farewell to Kings in particular are a treat to the ears IMO.Ĭlick to expand. Most people here go with the West German and US Atomics for MP, both of which sound the same. Still, the ones that I picked up sound great to my ears. I believe that the 2015 hi-res remasters of the Mercury albums (if not all of them, then at least Power Windows) have some sort of digital watermark that affects the sound quality. The 2011 Sector remasters have a similar amount of compression, but their EQ is warmer and more analog-like than the 1997 discs. They're compressed, soarly lacking in midrange and tend to sound dull, harsh, and brittle all at the same time. While the 1997 remasters aren't bad by today's standards, almost all of them are the worst versions of each album on CD IMHO. All of the original Farewell to Kings CD's are more-or-less the same, so just pick up any non-remastered version that you can find. I suggest that you try to find cheap US CD's for the 2 albums and see if they click with you. However, the Anthems are pretty hard to find and they're typically priced between $20 to $40. The old Canadian Anthem CD's for 2112 and Hemispheres are generally viewed as being better than the original US and German discs because the latter 2 have smiley-faced EQ in comparison.
